For a teenage girl, her 16th birthday is perhaps the most special day. Movies like "16 Wishes" have romanticized this milestone, and every girl expects a wonderful day. This is also the legal age of driving in America, so a car becomes the most expected (and best) birthday gift.
Kevin Duke thought the same when he decided to buy his daughter a second-hand vehicle. What he found while sprucing up the automobile changed his life and led him on a hunt for the previous owner.
A Car for a Gift
A hardworking construction worker from Flatwoods, Kentucky, Kevin is a devoted father. When his daughter Jada Duke's 16th birthday came rolling around in 2017, he knew that it had to be special as it was the first big milestone in her life.
He had raised Jada with a lot of love and knew that a car would be a great present at 16. In America, that is the age when teenagers are allowed to drive and have their first jobs.

After he had decided that a vehicle was the way to go, Kevin started his journey of searching for one. He scoured every dealership far and wide, hoping one would house the gift he was searching for. Finally, he found it!
Fate drew him to a silver Ford Fusion. He knew the second-hand vehicle would be the perfect fit for Jada. Little did he know, secrets were waiting to be unraveled in the vehicle that only he could solve.
Makeover Time Leads to Discovery
Kevin realized that the automobile needed a bit of a makeover before it could be presented to his daughter. Parts needed to be oiled, tires needed to be maintained, and the car needed a thorough cleaning.
While going through the glove compartment, a little nook that he opened and fiddled with several times before, Kevin realized there was something strange going on. As it turns out, everything was not as it seemed!
A False Bottom in the Glove Compartment
He later told CNHI that he had opened the compartment several times before already. But on that particular day, he opened it to give the nook a proper cleaning. It was then that he discovered the glove compartment had a secret compartment.
Naturally, the whole thing intrigued him. He removed the faux plastic bottom to discover an envelope lying underneath it. Kevin had to get to the bottom of it—quite literally and figuratively.
An Envelope With a Message From the Past
On the envelope were the words "For New Car Owner: Important Info Inside." They are odd words to read anywhere, but they're especially odd when you see them on an anonymous letter in a second-hand vehicle you just purchased.
Many thoughts were going to Kevin's head. Who wrote the letter? Why was it addressed to him? Was it dangerous? And more importantly, what on earth was happening? He picked up the letter.
A Message Beyond Imagination
Curiosity was bubbling inside of him, and Kevin could not wait any longer. Still in the automobile, he opened the envelope and began to read the letter from the hidden compartment.
He had hoped it wouldn't have any disturbing news about mechanical problems. Wouldn't it be a shame to buy a gift for his daughter only for it to fall apart? But as he was reading, it was something he could have never imagined.
The Tears Would Not Stop Flowing
While reading the content of the letter, the waterworks opened. When he was done with it, the incredible truth embroiled in the content went straight to his heart, and he started sobbing.
In his own words to CNHI, the Flatwoods native said that he "bawled like a baby." It was at that moment that Kevin knew he had to make a difference in the life of the previous owner.
The Previous Owner Has a Heart-Breaking Story to Tell
The letter was written by the previous owner, and it aimed to show how special the vehicle was to her. She had written that the Ford Fusion was linked to a very tragic day—the day her mother had passed away.
Not only that, but her daughter and aunt had also met death in the same circumstances that had taken her mother's life. This car seemed very special to her, and Kevin felt very guilty about having taken it.
The Previous Owner's Final Goodbye
Sabrina Archey, who lived in a nearby town called Greenup, was the previous owner and the one who wrote the letter. Having gone through such a big tragedy, she had written it as the final goodbye to the vehicle and to her family.

Sabrina had been hard at work, trying to earn some money to provide a beautiful life for her daughter. Now, she had no daughter, no mother, and no aunt. The future she had been building had been blown away like ash.
She was also facing some tough decisions now. Besides dealing with her internal turmoil, Sabrina had to make hard-hitting choices about the few monetary possessions that had remained.
A Terrible Insurance Mix-up
In the letter, Sabrina says it was a fault of her own. While dealing with her own grief, she forgot to make some payments. The insurance mix-up meant the vehicle could not be paid off and had to be given away.
It was the last link to her family; earlier on February 25, her daughter and mother had gone shopping in the car and got haircuts. Now, that link had to be severed.
Three Funerals Are Expensive
After her house got burned, Sabrina went through several financial constraints. She no longer had property to live on and no family to come home to. Then there was the burden of planning three funerals.
All of this financial burden could be slightly alleviated by selling her vehicle, even if the sale would add to her pain. The earlier paperwork mix-up had put her in a hard place, and she had to rise above it.
A Little Mark on the Dashboard
Sabrina was preparing her last memorable possession for her potential buyers to view. She was cleaning the insides of the automobile when she noticed a little mark on the dashboard.
In the letter, she explained that the mark was made by her late daughter, who would always put her feet up on it. The mother and daughter duo would then sit and make up little adventures. The memory of all those moments and the mark inspired her to write the letter.
A Band Named “Dr. Hook” and a Car Named “Sylvia”
Sabrina and her daughter would play music loud in the car. It was on one day of loud music when the song "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook blared from the radio. Sabrina's bright little daughter had suggested that's what they would name their vehicle.
The silver Ford Fusion was christened "Sylvia." In her letter, the previous owner requested the new owners not to change the name. It would mean a lot to her if the vehicle was still "Sylvia" for her daughter.
Bicycle Rides That Left Marks and Bruises
A few months before her tragic demise, Sabrina's daughter had learned to ride her bike. It's a huge feat for any child but not without a few collisions and falls, and the automobile sustained a few dents from where the eager kid had bumped against it.
Sabrina wrote about those dents lovingly in her letter, telling the new owner that the dents in the "rear driver's side fender" and "passenger's door" were from her daughter's bicycle crashes.
A Treasure Trove of Memories: Road Trips, Music and Diapers
In the letter, Sabrina went through all her memories, allowing her thoughts to pour into her letter. They had taken so many road trips with "Sylvia" as their constant companion. They would blast loud music—"Big Green Tractor" was her daughter's favorite.

She found out that Kevin and Sabrina were already in contact. She tapped Kevin and they decided to get together and plan something special for Sabrina. It would be the greatest gift she would ever receive.
Fulfilling Sabrina’s Deepest Desire
When Sabrina was concluding her letter, she mentioned that if the new owners ever decided to get rid of "Sylvia," they should try and reach out to her. Her financial situation had become unstable after paying for three funerals.
Sabrina, in the letter, still held hope for the future. She hoped that she would be able to afford her last family and buy it back. Kevin and Tammi decided that she would get her wish, free of cost.

At that moment, Sabrina says, she could smell her mother's perfume. It was like she was here all along. Sabrina felt very grateful to be back in her automobile again.
